There are several types of water damage that can occur in your home.  There is water damage from clean water and water damage from contaminated water.

If the damage is from contaminated water you must avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by the sewage.  Be sure to wash hands thoroughly after any contact with the contaminated items.  Don’t spread the water by walking on the damaged areas.  Don’t turn on the heat or air conditioner because that will spread the contaminated air.  Don’t turn on any fans to dry the area because that too will spread the contamination.

If the damage is from clean water here are the steps to take.  Shut off the water source or call someone that is qualified to do it.  Turn off the circuit breakers for wet areas. Try to remove as much water as possible with mopping and blotting.  Wipe the excess water off furniture and prop up wet cushions to dry.  Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs.  Remove to a dry place any paintings, art work, computers, documents and any other valuables that would be sensitive to moisture.  Hang your drapes over coat hangers to avoid contact with the wet floor.  Don’t go into a room if the water is touching any electrical hazard.  Don’t leave any colored items on the carpet or furniture for it may cause staining.  Don’t use appliances or TVs because it could cause electrical shock. Don’t turn on ceiling fans if the ceiling is wet.

In all cases call your insurance agent in Sarasota Florida or a reputable fire and water restoration service.  They are the professional and will be able to help you through the situation.
